Philodendron: Orange Marmalade or Prince Of Orange?

Split screen image of Philodendron Orange Marmalade and Philodendron Prince of Orange

This is a question that we have been asked many times since opening Beyond Tropics and we thought it may be a lovely idea to share our views to help you decide whether to choose a Philodendron Orange Marmalade or Prince Of Orange to your plant collection.

Lets start off by talking about the plants themselves and they we can summarise at the end.

The Philodendron Orange Marmalade

Known to many as Philodendron 'Quad Colour'. The Orange Marmalade is a hybrid resulting from crossbreeding different Philodendron varieties. This truly outstanding plant has red petioles and leaf margins and new leaves that emerge bright orange with green spotting before transitioning to a light green or lime colour as they mature.

What makes the Philodendron Orange Marmalade different to the Prince of Orange?

It's leaves are longer, have a thinner appearance and have a wavey appearance on the edges. As we mentioned above, as the new leaves emerge, they are bright orange with green blotches. This variegation is truly eye-catching and unlike the Prince of Orange, as this plants leaves mature it shows orange blotching alongside green.

Philodendron Prince of Orange

The Prince of Orange is also a Hybrid Philodendron and is more commonly found in garden centres, plant shops and plant collections throughout the world. It's clear to see why many choose to have this beautiful hybrid in their collection and continue to do so at a growing rate.

But what are the differences that make the prince of orange different?

It's leaves are wider and rounder than those of the Orange Marmalade. As new leaves emerge, they are a beautiful bright orange. As the Prince of Orange's leaves mature, they vary from a lighter shade of green to a darker shade of green.

Summary

Both are truly exceptional plants with their own uniqueness and while their are many similarities, there are differences which means that if you are like us and live in an indoor jungle, you just have to have both to see for yourself!

And what's ever better is that both aren't difficult to care for. Simply keep them both in a spot where they get indirect sunlight and water when the top 1" of the soil is dry and you can't go wrong!

We recommend Soil Ninja Philodendron and Monstera Blend which we have available on our shop and ensure that you keep your Philodendron in a pot with adequate drainage. Often we suggest for those wishing to have a decorative pot, like our Ocean Eco Pots is to have an inner plastic pot, such as the pots that our plants arrive to you in, and place directly into a decorative outer pot. Then you can have the best of both worlds!

As always, thank you to you all for supporting our little shop and we can't wait to speak to and meet many more of you soon,
